STAND UP FOR KIDS: How Taking a Stand Becomes a Life’s Mission

November 28, 2013  |  Community Involvement

Stand Up for Kids — a name so perfectly matched to its mission that the name gracefully transitions from an organization to an advocacy in one fluid stride.

The mission: to put an end to the cycle of youth homelessness in the country.

Stand Up for Kids is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 by a group of volunteers in San Diego, California with the aim of rescuing homeless and at-risk youth. Starting with one city, it has grown to be a national non-profit operating in 16 states and The District of Columbia. The heart of the organization is the volunteers from the different Stand Up for Kids chapters throughout the country. Since its inception, it has remained a volunteer-based organization with dedicated, selfless, and spirited people managing its programs and projects. With this volunteerism, Stand Up for Kids is able to spend 94% of all donations directly to the youth in their program.

Alarming Facts

- There are 1.5 million homeless children in America.

- If all these homeless children live in one city, it would be the 7th largest city
in the U.S.

- There are 13 kids on the streets who die every day.

- Human trafficking of youth, or what is known as human trading for sexual slavery, forced labor, and even organ extraction, is the fastest growing crime.

- About 100,000 children are sold into the sex trade within the US alone every year.

Why volunteers selflessly work on the streets

Stand Up for Kids primary objective is to establish and build relationships with runaway, homeless & street dependent youth ages 13-25. With the support of caring individuals who also wish to make a difference in the lives of the homeless youth, the volunteers help these youth adjust to a safe alternative living arrangements while learning to become independent and self-sufficient and at the same time, encouraging them to pay the goodness forward to the society. For those who may be unwilling or unable to leave the streets, the organization aims to give the support essential for these youth to be safe while still out there on the streets.

Stand Up for Kids Denver Chapter

In cities across America, Stand Up for Kids takes a stand against youth homelessness and Stand Up for Kids-Denver is one of the most active community service groups in Colorado, carrying out the mission of helping the homeless, improving their lives, and eventually ending the cycle of homelessness among the youth.

Making a Difference for the Homeless Youth in Colorado

Host a Sunday Meal is a weekly feeding program of the Denver team. This opens doors for groups, be it family or group of friends to do a one-time volunteer service. Stand up for Kids-Denver coordinates with these volunteers to host a meal for about 60 homeless youth in Colorado.

The Denver team also runs a winter donation project soliciting blankets, coats, hand and feet warmers, socks, gloves, hats, and other winter essentials. With the temperature dropping and with fewer resources than most people, the kids out in the streets are in need of extra clothing to keep them warm and dry this winter.

In commemoration of the National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, Stand Up for Kids-Denver is collecting used cellphones and other gadgets (broken or not) like tablets, iPhones, inkjet cartridges, ipods, and digital cameras  the whole month of November to use for their Recycling Fundraiser project. Proceeds from the fundraising drive will support the programs for the homeless youth in Colorado.
