Cheesman Park

The Many Faces of Cheesman

Cheesman Park is one of Denver’s most charming, picturesque parks. It means different things to many people.

It is a top jogging spot, a playground for children, and a playfield for adults where throwing Frisbees, flying kites, and playing soccer are a common sight.

Cheesman Park is an urban refuge, a contrast to the densely populated Capitol Hill. Cheesman is an exclusive hub for upscale citizens who live in houses and condos bordering the park.

This lovely park also used to be a cemetery believed to contain as many as three thousand bodies of Denver’s earliest residents. For the thrill-seekers, it is more than just a pretty park. It is in fact believed to be haunted said to house interesting figures and stories from the late 19th century from vagrants and paupers to criminals. The park’s construction started by the removal of coffins, and filled in and planted with shrubs. However, the work was completed in the early 20th century without ever having moved all the dead bodies in the cemetery. The haunted stories are plenty that some have even been documented on national television!

If you are feeble at heart when it comes to ghost stories, don’t rule out a visit to Cheesman Park. Come daytime and you will see how enchanting the place is. As part of Denver’s extensive park system, you will see an abundance of colorful flowers everywhere! And the park never goes lacking with how well-maintained the entire park area is. Indeed, one of the best parks in the city.

The Cheesman Park Neighborhood

Cheesman Park Victorian home

Located next to the Capitol Hill, the park’s neighborhood is all about grand historic-looking Victorian homes blended gracefully with modern condominiums, apartments, and town homes. This neighborhood is one of the oldest districts in Denver dating to as far back as 1868. The completion of the park in 1907 gave way to the construction of mansions for some of Denver’s wealthiest. The 1930s later on ushered the development of apartments in the area.

“Humboldt Island” is a historic residential quarter in Cheesman Park consisting of old Victorian houses. The more modern condominiums offer awesome views of the Rocky Mountain Range and downtown Denver. Lofts and town homes are also favorite properties, many of them conversions of older mansions. Wyman’s and Morgan Addition are two other historic districts in Cheesman.

The Cheesman Park neighborhood is bordered north to south by Colfax and 8th Avenues and by Downing in the east and Josephine Streets in the west.

The popularity of the Cheesman Park neighborhood is evident in its population having a density of more than 12,000 people per square mile. A huge difference from Denver’s average density of 3,600 people per square mile brought about by the high-rise and mid-rise condos and town homes surrounding Cheesman Park. Definitely a residential favorite.
